Description

Essentials about the Galleria d’arte moderna di Milano in brief

For art lovers, a visit to the Galleria d’arte moderna di Milano (Milan Modern Art Gallery) is a must during a trip to Milan. Usually just called “GAM” for short, the gallery holds the largest municipal collection of 19th century art. Housed in the beautiful Villa Reale on the edge of the Giardini Pubblici Indro Montanelli, the GAM features a variety of masterpieces from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The history of the Galleria d’arte moderna di Milano

Villa Reale, which houses the Galleria d’arte moderna di Milano, was built at the end of the 18th century as a residence for Count Ludovico Barbiano of Belgiojoso. After the count’s death, the villa was bought by the government of the then Cisalpine Republic to serve as the Milanese residence of Napoleon Bonaparte.
