MUSEO POLDI PEZZOLI

Description

Essentials about the Museo Poldi Pezzoli in brief

Art lovers should make a detour in Milan to the Museo Poldi Pezzoli, located not far from the Scala opera house. The museum houses one of the most important private art collections in Italy. The nobleman Poldi Pezzoli’s passion for collecting was almost limitless and ranged from jewelry and armor from antiquity to paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance to watches and porcelain from the 19th century.

The history of the Museo Poldi Pezzoli

The Museo Poldi Pezzoli is the legacy of the traveling aristocrat Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, who lived from 1822 to 1879. Poldi Pezzoli was a passionate collector whose passion knew hardly any limits in terms of specific art periods or art objects. Thus, about 3,000 objects belong to the Poldi Pezzoli collection, including archaeological finds, warrens and armor, glass and porcelain, jewelry, prints and books, as well as paintings and sculptures. The collection of paintings includes the works of some famous masters, such as Sandro Botticelli, Canaletto and Andrea Mantegna, but also the works of many unknown artists.

Two years after Poldi Pezzoli’s death, a museum was set up in his former villa to showcase his collections and was opened to the public. The museum is worth a visit not only for its diverse exhibits, but also for their extraordinary presentation in the beautiful rooms of Villa Poldi Pezzoli.
