PONTE DEGLI SCALZI

Description

Essentials about the Ponte degli Scalzi in brief

The Ponte degli Scalzi is one of only four bridges spanning the Grand Canal. Built in the mid-19th century, the bridge connects the two districts of Santa Croce and Cannaregio. The bridge is named after the nearby Scalzi Church. The Ponte degli Scalzi is one of the most frequented bridges in Venice. This is primarily due to the fact that Venice’s main train station Santa Lucia is located right next to the bridge and the way from there to the old town leads over the bridge.

The history of the Ponte degli Scalzi

The first iron bridge construction dates back to 1858 and was erected by the imperial and royal administration of the time. It was replaced between 1932 and 1934 by a bridge made of Istrian limestone by engineer Eugenio Miozzi. Miozzi, by the way, also provided the designs for the two other Venetian bridges, the Ponte dell’Accademia over the Grand Canal and the Ponte della Libertà, which connects Venice with the mainland.
