LEIDSEPLEIN

Description

Essentials about Leidseplein in brief

Together with Rembrandtplein, Leidseplein (Leiden Square) is the most famous entertainment mile in Amsterdam. Bars, cafés, fast-food restaurants, coffee shops, cinemas, discos and theaters are lined up here. During the summer months, especially on nice days, Leidseplein is bursting at the seams. Locals and tourists flock to the square en masse to enjoy a drink in the sun on the terraces of the bars and cafés and to be entertained by street musicians, jugglers, mimes, break dancers and other performance artists.

Leidseplein as an entertainment center

The Leidseplein is the classic place to start the Amsterdam nightlife. With the Melkweg and the Paradiso, two of Amsterdam’s most famous stages for music events are located here. If you prefer something more dignified, you can go to the Stadschouwburg, Amsterdam’s municipal theater. With the DeLaMar and the Bellevue there are two more theaters in the immediate vicinity. And those who prefer to spend their evening at the roulette or blackjack table can go to the Holland Casino. In winter, by the way, part of Leidseplein is transformed into an ice rink.

The history of Leidseplein

The name Leidseplein goes back historically to the Leidsepoort (Leiden Gate), which was one of the eight city gates of Amsterdam from 1664 to 1862. This is where the road to the city of Leiden used to start. Today, Leidseplein is still one of the main traffic hubs in the center of Amsterdam.
