Essentials about Micropia in brief
This zoo is not for people who suffer from mysophobia (the pathological fear of infection by bacteria and viruses). That’s because Micropia, which opened in 2014, is the world’s first zoo for microbiological life. Micropia is a department of the zoological garden Artis in Amsterdam.
The exhibition at Micropia
Using 3D binoculars coupled to the lenses of a microscope to provide a sharp image magnified thousands of times, the aim is to show how microorganisms live and feed. In addition, virtual displays will illustrate extreme habitats of microbes.
Many of the exhibits in Micropia depict the displacement of microbes in daily life. For example, the Kiss-O-Meter illustrates how many microbes are transferred when two people kiss. As they leave Micropia, most visitors will probably ask how long they plan to keep their next toothbrush.
