Essentials about Rembrandtplein in brief
Next to Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein is Amsterdam’s second major entertainment and nightlife hotspot. In the blocks of houses around the square are bars, pubs, cafes, restaurants, hotels and some large discos. Accordingly, Rembrandtplein is popular with locals and tourists alike. In summer and when the weather is nice, the terraces of the cafes and restaurants are literally stormed and the square is bursting at the seams.
The history of Rembrandtplein
Since 1876, the square has been named after the great Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn, who lived here for many years (see the Rembrandt House Museum). Previously, the square was called Botermarkt (meaning “butter market”), as farmers from the surrounding area sold their dairy products to the townspeople here. Since 1852, the square has been home to a statue of Rembrandt, which, on the occasion of his 400th birthday in 2006, is surrounded by several smaller bronze sculptures representing his famous painting “The Night Watch”.
Another extraordinary detail of the square is the huge LC screen. Using a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone, pedestrians can interact with the screen and upload videos, for example.
