MOSCOW BOTANICAL GARDEN

Description

Essentials about the Moscow Botanical Garden in brief

Amateur gardeners and plant lovers will get their money’s worth in the Moscow Botanical Garden. But a visit to the Botanical Garden is also recommended to those who want to gain a little peace and distance from the enormous hustle and bustle and noise of the metropolis of Moscow. During a walk among roses and exotic plants, the Russian capital is suddenly very far away.

The location of the Moscow Botanical Garden

Officially, the garden is called Botanical Nikolai Zizin Garden Moscow of the Russian Academy of Sciences in memory of its long-time director Nikolai Zizin and in view of the fact that the garden belongs to the biological department of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is located in the northeast of the city, not far from the Ostankino tower.

The grounds of the Moscow Botanical Garden

With an area of 360 hectares, the Moscow Botanical Garden is the largest of its kind in Russia. The garden represents a vast park complex on the pattern of Russian aristocratic estates of the 18th and 19th centuries. It also includes the classicist ensemble of the former estate of Count Nikolai Petrovich Sheremetev (Ostankino Castle). The Botanical Garden was founded only in 1945, but its historical roots go back further into the past. As early as in the 17th century an apothecary garden with medicinal plants was established nearby.

The gardens and buildings of the Moscow Botanical Garden

If you want, you can easily spend a few hours among the more than 8,200 plant species of the Moscow Botanical Garden. If you have less time, you should definitely see the rose garden. With over 2,500 different species of roses, it is one of the most beautiful of its kind in the world. Also worth a detour is the Japanese Garden, which transports you straight to Japan with its decorative pavilions, pagodas and gates made of bamboo, as well as its flora of rhododendrons and cherry and maple trees. Fans of exotic plants should also have seen the Orangery, where heat-loving orchids and carnivorous plants, among others, thrive protected from the Russian winter in a cozy greenhouse environment.
