SOKOLNIKI PARK

Description

Essentials about Sokolniki Park in brief

Sokolniki Park is one of the most popular recreational areas for Muscovites. The six-square park is located in the northeast of the center of Moscow and in addition to its natural scenery offers a wide variety of entertainment, games and sports.

The history of Sokolniki Park

The park owes its name to the Sokolniki quarter, which was home to the tsar’s falconers in the 17th century (“Sokol” means “falcon” in Russian). The quarter was founded by Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich (the father of Peter the Great), who was an avid hunter. Under his son the creation of the park in its present form was begun. In 1878 Sokolniki Park was finally opened to the public.

Activities in Sokolniki Park

Today Sokolniki Park is a beautiful and, above all, versatile park. Muscovites and also some tourists come here to walk, ride a bike or skate on the paths among birches, oaks, spruces, pines and many more tree species. For amusement addicts there is a small (and somewhat aged) amusement park. Children and teenagers will have their fun in the Inno-Park, in the Children’s Creativity Centre or on one of the playgrounds. And beyond that, the park also offers carting, chess, dancing and, of course, ice skating in the winter. Catering for the park visitors is also provided. Especially in the entrance area of the park there are a number of cafes and stalls.

Festivals in Sokolniki Park

Sokolniki Park is also known and loved for its many events and festivals that take place here every year, such as the Spring Baby Festival, the Summer Jazz Festival, the International Clown Festival and the Ice Sculpture Contest in winter. By the way, if you want to enjoy even more nature, you can do it in Losiny Ostrow National Park, which immediately adjoins Sokolniki Park to the northeast.
