SPARROW HILLS

Description

Essentials about the Sparrow Hills in brief

If you want to enjoy a great view of large parts of Moscow and also walk in the greenery, you should make your way to the Sparrow Hills. The term “hills” is perhaps a bit of an exaggeration, as it is a natural elevation only up to about 70 meters high and about four kilometers long, which stretches along the west bank of the Moskva River. But the beautiful view of Moscow from the upper viewing platform and many other points of the Sparrow Hills probably justifies the term “hills” after all.

The Sparrow Hills as a local recreation area

The name Sparrow Hills is derived from the nearby village Vorobyovo (Sparrow). By the way, until 1999 the hills still bore the name of the revolutionary leader Lenin. The almost continuously forested Sparrow Hills have been one of the most popular recreation spots for Muscovites for centuries. The promenade on the bank of the Moskva River and the forest on the slopes of the hills are perfect for walking and jogging. And in winter there is even a ski slope for Moscow skiers.

Buildings in the Sparrow Hills

The most famous structure of the Sparrow Hills is the main building of the Lomonosov University on the upper plateau. It is one of the monumental skyscrapers called Stalin’s Seven Sisters, which are probably the most famous architectural legacy of the former ruler of the Soviet Union. Another very prominent building is the Lushniki Olympic Stadium, located directly on the opposite side of the Moskva River. Here also begins a cable car, which is the most convenient way to “climb” the Sparrow Hills.
