Essentials about the House of Culture in brief
The Kulturhuset (House of Culture) is one of the most important cultural centers in the Swedish capital. No wonder, given the incredibly wide range of cultural and other leisure activities that the building has to offer. In addition to the Stockholm City Theater and the city library, the Kulturhuset houses galleries, exhibition spaces, bars and restaurants. There is something new to see and experience here every day.
The history and architecture of the House of Culture
The House of Culture was built between 1968 and 1973 according to plans by Professor Peter Celsing and was part of the redevelopment of Stockholm’s city center at the time. As part of the urban redevelopment, it was decided to build a center for culture and art, which was also to house a library with a reading room, a culture store and a hotel. The five-storey building with its striking glass front was opened in 1974.
The House of Culture’s offer
The House of Culture has quickly become one of Stockholm’s most important meeting places. This is mainly due to its countless leisure activities. The wide range of cultural activities on offer at the House of Culture caters for every taste. There are exhibition spaces for painting and photography as well as a theater wing that houses the Stockholm City Theater. The city theater offers a wide range of plays and dance performances.
The House of Culture also houses the Stockholm City Library, one of the largest libraries in Sweden. The library is home to a huge selection of books, magazines, newspapers and other media. There are also several galleries in the Kulturhuset, where regularly changing exhibitions of contemporary art are shown.
On the 5th floor of the building you will find the famous internet café Access, Café Panorama with a great view, a children’s craft workshop and two bars. On the first floor is the Design Torget store, where young artists present their new designs to the public.
