The Moderna museet was opened on the island of Skeppsholmen in 1958. In 1994, a new building designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo was erected and opened four years later. Due to moisture damage, the museum had to be renovated for several years and returned to the premises in 2004. Since 2009, the Moderna museet has had a branch in Malmö, Sweden.
