The location of Monteliusvägen

Monteliusvägen is located on the northern shore of the island of Södermalm. The almost 420-metre-long path begins in the west at Kattgränd and continues east to Skolgränd. The footpath is about 20 to 30 meters above the water level of Riddarfjärden and the Söder Mälarstrand road that runs along the shore.

From the path, there are wonderful views of Riddarfjärden, the Kungsholmen and Riddarholmen districts and, of course, first and foremost Stockholm’s old town, Gamla stan. For photographers, the short walk is pure paradise, as there are so many photo opportunities from here. Especially at sunset and at night, when the city lights of Stockholm begin to sparkle in the water, the magic of Monteliusvägen is particularly great.

The history of Monteliusvägen

Plans for the construction of Monteliusvägen had already existed since the end of the 1970s. However, construction only began in 1998, as many local residents objected to the construction of a footpath in front of their houses. Incidentally, the path is named after the Swedish prehistorian Oscar Montelius, who was born nearby.

A walk along Monteliusvägen

Monteliusvägen is freely accessible at any time of year. Visitors who like it a little quieter should take the well-known path in the early morning or late evening. During the day it can get very crowded here, especially on nice summer days.

It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, as the path is uneven in places. Walkers should be particularly careful in winter, as ice and snow make the Monteliusvägen not entirely safe.
