STOCKHOLM CITY MUSEUM

Description

Essentials about the Stockholm City Museum in brief

Anyone interested in the history of Stockholm should make their way to the Stockholm City Museum. Located on the island of Södermalm, the museum vividly depicts the history of the Swedish capital from the early 16th century onwards. The exhibition focuses on the lives of the city’s inhabitants.

The history and architecture of the Stockholm City Museum

The building of the Stockholm City Museum was built in several stages between 1664 and 1680 according to plans by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. The museum was founded in 1937 and reopened in 2019 after extensive renovations.

The exhibition at the Stockholm City Museum

The Stockholm City Museum shows the history of the Swedish capital from 1527 onwards. The Medeltidsmuseum (Museum of Medieval Stockholm) has its own museum for the period before that.

The City Museum’s exhibition focuses less on kings, politics and wars and more on the everyday life of the capital’s inhabitants. On three floors, the history of the city is presented in an informative way in around 20 themed areas.

The focus here is on the central questions of everyday life: How did the people of Stockholm live and work in the various periods of the city’s history? How did they spend their leisure time? How did they dress? And how were their homes furnished?

The answers are given by means of replicas of homes with life-size figures, clothes and hundreds of exhibits. The Stockholm City Museum has an impressive collection of more than 300,000 objects, 25,000 works of art and 3.5 million photographs.
