Essentials about Strandvägen in brief

The magnificent Strandvägen boulevard is probably the most beautiful street in Stockholm. Its wonderful location on the water with numerous boats and its rows of lime trees give it a wonderful maritime flair. A stroll along this magnificent boulevard should be part of every visit to Stockholm.

The history of Strandvägen

In the 19th century, Strandvägen looked nothing like it does today. At that time, Ladugårdslands Strandgata was lined with ramshackle houses and temporary accommodation. The road itself was barely passable.

In the middle of the 19th century, the Stockholm city council began to discuss the construction of a quay from Nybroplan to Djurgårds Bridge to improve the situation on Ladugårdslands Strandgata. The head of the city’s hydraulic engineering office, von Rothstein, was commissioned to solve the problem. In 1859, he presented his plan for a wide, tree-lined boulevard “without equal in Europe”.

Construction work began in 1862, but until the 1890s Strandvägen, which was so named in 1885, was still a huge building site. However, the magnificent boulevard was completed for the Stockholm Industrial Exhibition in 1897.

Strandvägen today

Today, Strandvägen is probably the most beautiful street in the Swedish capital. Many celebrities live in the magnificent buildings on its northern side and numerous exclusive stores line the street.

Strandvägen is also one of Stockholm’s most popular promenades due to its wonderful location by the water. Its rows of lime trees and the numerous old and new boats on the waterfront give the boulevard a wonderful maritime flair. Strandvägen is perfect for a walk from Gamla stan to the island of Djurgården.
