Essentials about the Mandai Bird Paradise in brief
Bird lovers definitely cannot avoid a visit to the Mandai Bird Paradise on a trip to Singapore. Bird Paradise replaced Jurong Bird Park, Asia’s largest bird park, in 2023. The 17-hectare zoo grounds are home to over 3,000 birds from 400 different species. Many of the birds to be seen in Bird Paradise are threatened with extinction in the wild.
Location and layout of the Mandai Bird Paradise
The Mandai Bird Paradise is located in the immediate vicinity of the three other facilities of the Mandai Wildlife Reserve: the Singapore Zoo, the Night Safari and the River Wonders. Animal fans can thus spend a whole day surrounded by land, water and flying animals.
The aviaries at Bird Paradise are among the largest in the world, giving park visitors a unique feeling of being in the wild. Many of the zones in the bird park have several levels, allowing visitors to observe the feathered inhabitants from different perspectives.
The zones of the Mandai Bird Paradise
The Mandai Bird Paradise is divided into ten different zones. These are
- Amazonian Jewels: The vegetation in this zone is modeled on the rainforests of Central and South America. Numerous representatives of the Latin American bird world can be found here, such as rock jays, cracids, curassows, macaws, toucans, quetzals and oropendolas
- Shaw Foundation Australia Outback: Around 30 bird species from Down Under can be seen here. They live in the semi-arid environment of the Australian outback and the semi-tropical vegetation of north-eastern Australia.
- Nyungwe Forest Heart of Africa: This zone is modeled on the forested valleys of the African continent and is home to over 80 African bird species. Special highlights are the clever gray parrots (the Einsteins of the bird world) and the turacos with their mohawk hairstyles.
- Hong Leong Foundation Crimson Wetlands: The Crimson Wetlands are a true spectacle of color. Visitors will encounter some of the world’s most colorful birds amidst wetlands and crimson flowers. Take a cool break behind the curtain of the highest waterfall in Bird Paradise.
- Kuok Group Wings of Asia: Over 30 bird species from the Asian continent live here. The Wings of Asia zone is modeled on the tranquil bamboo groves and rice terraces of Bali and shows how birds adapt to life in man-made habitats.
- Lory Loft: The Lory Loft is home to numerous parrot species. The large population of blue-eyed cadus is particularly noteworthy.
- Mysterious Papua: This zone reveals the mysterious bird world of Papua New Guinea. Over 25 species of the still mysterious island live here, from the expressive palm cockatoos to the flightless southern cassowaries and the magnificent Nicobar pigeons.
- Ocean Network Express Penguin Cove: Penguin Cove is one of the world’s largest sub-Antarctic cold saltwater habitats for penguins. The Antarctic inhabitants can be observed both in an underwater kelp forest and on a rocky beach.
- Songs of the Forest: This area is home to the best singers in the Southeast Asian bird world. Visitors to the Songs of the Forest can listen to the melodies of the straw-headed bulbul, the Bali mynah, the Asian starling and the laughing thrush.
- Winged Sanctuary: The Winged Sanctuary houses the park’s collection of over 20 species of hornbills and other endangered tropical birds such as the Bali myna, Palawan peacock pheasant and Philippine eagle.
