Essentials about the Mandai River Wonders in brief
The Mandai River Wonders are Singapore’s newest zoo and a very special experience for young and old. Opened in 2014, the zoo is in fact Asia’s first and only river nature park, where visitors can discover the ecosystems of ten of the world’s largest rivers – including the animals that live there. The 12-hectare park is located between Singapore’s two other zoos, Singapore Zoo and Night Safari.
The Mandai River Wonders complex
The Mandai River Wonders consist of ten different ecosystems of the largest rivers in the world, such as the Amazon, the Ganges, the Yangtze, the Mississippi and the Nile. The park is home to over 6,000 animals from more than 300 species, many of which are endangered in the wild. For example, the animals living in the River Safari range from giant Chinese salamanders and Chinese alligators to jaguars and maned wolves, anacondas and squirrel monkeys, manatees and stingrays.
However, the absolute highlight and the biggest visitor magnet of the River Wonders are the two giant pandas. They live in a specially air-conditioned enclosure that simulates the environmental conditions in their Chinese homeland as closely as possible. The zoo has even created its own bamboo plantation for the two pandas. Incidentally, similarly popular to the giant pandas are the much smaller red pandas, whose cute fox-like faces are an equally popular photo subject.
Another special attraction of the Mandai River Wonders is the so-called Amazon River Quest. The approximately ten-minute boat tour takes visitors directly into the Amazon rainforest, where you can get up close and personal with about 30 rainforest inhabitants, including Brazilian tapirs, capybaras, giant anteaters and jaguars.
Last but not least, the Mandai River Wonders has the world’s largest freshwater aquarium. In the Amazon Flooded Forest, you can experience the underwater world of the South American rainforest live behind a giant 22-by-4-meter glass screen.
