Essentials about the National Gallery Singapore in brief

Art lovers should definitely not miss a visit to the National Gallery Singapore during a trip to Singapore. Opened in 2015 in downtown Singapore, the National Gallery is the latest highlight of the small city-state’s burgeoning art and gallery scene. With a collection of over 8,000 works of art, the National Gallery holds the world’s largest collection of art from Singapore and Southeast Asia.

The building of the National Gallery Singapore

To house the National Gallery, the two beautiful historic buildings of the former Supreme Court Building and the City Hall were converted into an architecturally sophisticated museum complex. With an area of 64,000 square meters, the National Gallery is the largest museum in Singapore in terms of space.

The collection of the National Gallery Singapore

The National Gallery Singapore collection features art from Singapore and other Southeast Asian countries from the 19th century to the present. The gallery has two permanent exhibitions: DBS Singapore Gallery and UOB Southeast Asia Gallery. The National Gallery’s objective is to present the social, economic and political history of Singapore and the entire Southeast Asia region based on its collection of contemporary art. It features works by Singapore’s most respected artists, such as Georgette Chen, Chen Chong Swee, Chen Wen Hsi, Cheong Soo Pieng and Liu Kang, as well as works by well-known Southeast Asian artists, such as Affandi (Indonesia), Latiff Mohidin (Malaysia), Le Pho (Vietnam), Montien Boonma (Thailand) and Fernando Cueto Amorsolo (Philippines).

Eating and drinking at the National Gallery Singapore

If so much art makes you hungry or thirsty, the National Gallery offers an excellent selection of bars and restaurants. The two cocktail bars Aura Sky Lounge and Smoke & Mirrors are worth a drink for their great views of downtown Singapore alone.
