Long Street is the most famous street in the center of Cape Town and also one of the oldest. The 3.2-kilometer-long street existed 300 years ago and connected the harbor with the Tamboerskloof district. Today, Long Street is a hive of activity at all times of the day and night. During the day, the many small stores attract shopaholics to the street. And in the evening, Long Street turns into Cape Town’s most important party mile. In the cafés, bars, restaurants and clubs of the street you can spend a long evening or a long night.

The buildings on Long Street

A special feature of Long Street is its many Georgian and Victorian style buildings, many still with wrought iron balcony railings on their facades. Many of the houses on Long Street have been extensively renovated in recent years. In between, however, there are always buildings that are in a deplorable condition.

Shopping, eating and drinking on Long Street

Long Street is one of the few streets in Cape Town that is busy at all times of the day and night. In the lower part of the street (towards the harbor) you will find mostly offices. In the section between the Strand Street and Wale Street various smaller stores are located selling antiques, clothing, books, handicrafts and food. Long Street owes its reputation as a party mile to the third section, where dozens of cafés, bars, restaurants, youth hostels and clubs are lined up.
