The Sea Point district is one of the most interesting and up-and-coming neighborhoods in Cape Town. Sea Point is about three kilometers long but only 600 meters wide and is idyllically “squeezed” between Signal Hill and the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. Sea Point borders Green Point to the north and the exclusive posh suburbs of Clifton and Camps Bay to the south. Sea Point is considered the most densely populated part of Cape Town outside the townships.

The population structure of Sea Point

During the apartheid regime, Sea Point was a “white” district where colored South Africans were not allowed to live. Since the end of apartheid, Sea Point has increasingly developed into a multi-cultural district. Black South Africans have moved in, and because of its location near the city center and the sea, many Europeans have also settled in the district. In addition, Sea Point is also a popular place for international students to live because of its many language schools.

The history of Sea Point

Sea Point’s main artery is Main Road, which stretches for over five kilometers from Green Point to Clifton and runs virtually parallel to the coast for about 200 meters. On Main Road and its side streets you will find a variety of stores, cafés and restaurants. This was not always the case, as after the opening of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront at Cape Town’s old harbor in the 1990s, the neighborhood began a steady decline. Many stores and restaurants migrated to the new and much busier V&A Waterfront, leaving large gaps in the district. For some years now, however, Sea Point has been experiencing a noticeable upswing again. More and more new bars, restaurants and stores are opening their doors.

The promenade of Sea Point

The redesign and upgrading of the promenade certainly also made a significant contribution. The approximately five-kilometer-long waterfront promenade runs from the World Cup stadium in Green Point to Bantry Bay. Hundreds of Capetonians gather here in the early morning and late afternoon for jogging and walking. On weekends, the promenade is the official promenade of Cape Town, so to speak. Next to the pedestrian walkway is a wide strip of grass where locals picnic, play ball games or just relax.

Sea Point beaches and the outdoor swimming pool

The beaches of Sea Point are not comparable in quality to those of Clifton or Camps Bay. They are quite rocky and also rather unkempt. This makes a visit to Sea Point’s outdoor pool all the more recommendable. Many people call it the most beautiful outdoor pool in the world because of its spectacular location on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean.
