Essentials about the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway in brief

There are two ways to get to the top of Table Mountain. More athletic people will be spoilt for choice with about 100 different hiking routes leading up the mountain from all directions. More comfortable people will choose to take the cable car to the top, as 900,000 other people do every year.

The history of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway

Plans to build a cable car up Table Mountain already existed in the 1870s. However, their implementation was prevented by the Boer Wars. In 1912, the municipality again investigated the possibility of building a cable car, but this time, too, the project was halted by the onset of World War I. It was not until 1926 that the plans of the Norwegian engineer Trygve Stromsoe were approved and the cableway was completed after a three-year construction period.

Since 1929, the cableway has undergone three major renovations. Most recently, the so-called “Rotair” gondolas were installed in 1997. Each gondola has a capacity of 65 passengers and rotates 360 degrees during the approximately five-minute ride. This takes away the stress of passengers fighting for the best window seats when boarding.
