If you want to go to the beach in Barcelona, you will inevitably end up in La Barceloneta. The seaside neighborhood is a peninsula between the old port Port Vell, the Olympic Port Olímpic and the Parc de la Ciutadella. Due to its privileged location, La Barcelonata has over a kilometer of bathing beach, popular with both locals and tourists. Characteristic of La Barceloneta are the long, narrow streets that cross the neighborhood in a north-south direction. The center of the neighborhood is Plaça de la Font with its renovated market hall.

The history of La Barceloneta

La Barceloneta used to be one of the poorer parts of Barcelona. Factory workers and especially fishermen lived here. Therefore, to this day, you can eat excellent freshly caught seafood in La Barceloneta in some of the best fish restaurants in the city. The 1992 Summer Olympics brought many changes to Barceloneta. The houses and streets were renovated. The old fishing shacks on the beach were demolished to make way for the new boardwalk. As a result of the renovations, La Barceloneta was also developed for tourism and it is increasingly one of the most desirable residential areas of Barcelona.
