Description
Essentials about CaixaForum Madrid in brief
Opened in 2008, CaixaForum Madrid is a museum, auditorium, and cultural and conference center in equal measure. In addition to exhibitions of ancient, modern and contemporary art, the CaixaForum also hosts music and literature festivals, discussion groups, conferences and workshops on a wide range of topics. It is housed in an impressive conversion of a former electricity plant, in the immediate vicinity of the Triángulo del Arte (“Triangle of Art”) with the world-famous Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums.
The building of CaixaForum Madrid
With this building, the world-renowned architectural firm Herzog & De Meuron has truly achieved something extraordinary. The architects brought the former power station into a kind of “suspended state” in which the entire above-ground building structure was placed on a tripod formed by the development cores. On the remaining footprint, the building literally floats above the covered plaza area, from which a main entrance staircase leads into the building. As a further architectural highlight, a vertical garden with around 15,000 plants from 250 different species was created on a facade adjacent to the forum.
The program of CaixaForum Madrid
CaixaForum has over 2,000 square meters of exhibition space, an auditorium with more than 300 seats and various conference rooms. There is also a café, a bookstore and a restaurant. Activities at the Forum range from exhibitions, discussions and programs from music to fine arts, social sciences and humanities.
