Essentials about Campo del Moro in brief
If you want to stretch your legs in the green after a visit to the Royal Palace of Madrid, you can do so right next door in the Campo del Moro (Moors’ Field). Located between the Manzanares River and the Royal Palace, Campo del Moro is one of Madrid’s most beautiful green spaces. The avenues and paths of Campo del Moro invite you to take long walks in the beautifully maintained park of about 20 hectares. And there’s a great view of the Royal Palace to boot.
The history of Campo del Moro
Campo del Moro probably owes its name to the Moors, who camped here in 1109 at the gates of the old palace-castle Alcázar (the predecessor of today’s Royal Palace) and tried in vain to capture the castle. The land on which Campo del Moro is located had not been landscaped for a long time, since it could not be connected to the latter due to its difference in elevation from the Royal Palace.
It was not until the middle of the 19th century that Queen Isabel II decided to transform the area into a romantic park along the lines of 19th century English parklands. Under her reign, the two famous fountains “Los Tritones” and “Las Conchas” were also built. The park finally got its present appearance under Queen María Cristina.
Today, Campo del Moro is certainly one of the most beautiful green spaces in Madrid. Probably because of its close proximity to the Royal Palace, the park is lovingly cared for. The many winding paths that branch off from the straight avenues of the park lead walkers into a beautiful natural landscape.
