CRYSTAL PALACE

Description

Essentials about the Crystal Palace in brief

Anyone walking in the beautiful Retiro Park will inevitably come across the so-called “Crystal Palace” (sp. “Palacio de Cristal”), one of the finest examples of Madrid’s cast-iron architecture. Once designed as a huge conservatory for tropical plants, the Crystal Palace is now used for temporary art and architecture exhibitions as an outpost of the Museo Reina Sofía.

The architecture of the Crystal Palace

The Crystal Palace was built on the occasion of the Philippine Exhibition in 1887. The design of the building made of cast iron and glass goes back to the Spanish architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco. The Crystal Palace is also particularly beautiful to look at because of its ceramic decorations.
