Animal fans and families with children will inevitably end up at the Madrid Zoo Aquarium during a trip to Madrid. The approximately 20-hectare zoo is located in the huge Casa de Campo urban forest and is one of the largest of its kind in Spain. Founded as early as 1770, the Madrid Zoo is one of the oldest animal parks in the world. Here, visitors can expect to see around 6,000 animals from about 500 different species from all over the world. The absolute highlight of the zoo are definitely the Chinese giant pandas, which can only be seen in a few places outside of China.

The animals in Madrid Zoo Aquarium

Originally, the zoo was located in Retiro Park and exhibited animals from the American and Asian provinces of the Spanish Empire. Since the 1970s, the zoo grounds have been located in Casa de Campo.

The Madrid Zoo Aquarium displays a very wide range of creatures from all five continents. There are hippos, gazelles, giraffes, gorillas, lemurs, leopards, chimpanzees, ostriches and zebras (from Africa), gibbons, camels, orangutans, giant pandas, tigers, tapirs and yaks (from Asia), bears, bison, lynx, wild boars and wolves (from Europe), seals, snowy owls, black bears and raccoons (from North America), macaws, capuchin monkeys and tapirs (from South America), and emus, koalas and wallabies (from Australia) – to name just a few of the 500 species. Very popular are the zoo’s dolphinarium, where dolphins and sea lions perform their tricks. And the smallest visitors will have their fun in the petting zoo.
