Fans of contemporary art in all its facets should make their way to the Matadero Madrid. The city’s former slaughterhouse, a complex of several Neomudejar-style buildings on the banks of the Manzanares River, was transformed into a small cultural city at the beginning of the 21st century. Since then, the many buildings on the site have served as a field of experimentation for a wide variety of artistic disciplines, and are intended to foster exchange between different types of art as well as between artists and the public.

The buildings of the Matadero Madrid

The Matadero Madrid consists of the following main buildings:

Abierto x Obras

The former cold storage hall is used for various artistic purposes.

Casa del Lector

At Casa del Lector, everything revolves around books and readers. At readings, training sessions, workshops and conferences, all people who are passionate about reading can immerse themselves in the diverse world of books.

Central de Diseño

In this hall, the Madrid Design Association works to promote and disseminate design. The Central de Diseñ0 hosts a wide variety of projects related to graphic, industrial and interior design.

Cineteca

The Cineteca is the place to go for all cineastes who enjoy watching documentaries. In fact, the Cineteca is the only cinema in Spain that exclusively shows non-fictional films.

Intermediae

As the name already expresses, Intermediae is intended as a mediation point between artists and citizens. It is a public laboratory where new forms of expression, thought and creation can be created in experimental programs.

Nave de Música

The Nave de Música is dedicated to music and musicians. Here you can find a radio studio, a recording studio, a stage for concerts and several rehearsal rooms for bands.

Naves Matadero

The International Center for Performing Arts encompasses all types of stage performance and visual arts, but also deals with literature, music, philisophy, and other arts disciplines.

Nave 16

With an exhibition area of more than 4,000 square meters, Nave 16 is the heart of the performing arts on the Matadero site. Due to its space and versatility, Nave 16 is used for exhibitions, installations, concerts and performances of various kinds.

Plaza y Calle Matadero

The open space of the Matadero Madrid is used as a multipurpose area for a wide variety of cultural activities with larger space requirements, such as dance, theater and circus events. In addition, Plaza y Calle Matadero are the central meeting point on the grounds of the Matadero.

Other facilities

In addition to the above-mentioned, the Matadero Madrid complex has a number of other premises with different uses. Visitors to the Matadero are catered for by three cafés and restaurants: La Cantina, Cafetería Naves and Terraza Matadero.
