SWEDISH HISTORY MUSEUM

Description

Essentials about the Swedish History Museum in brief

For history buffs, a visit to the Swedish History Museum (Statens historiska museum) is a must. After all, it is Sweden’s national museum for archaeology and ancient history. The museum is in possession of over 20 million objects from prehistoric, early historic and medieval times. Visitors can travel back in time to prehistoric times, immerse themselves in the world of the Vikings or discover the history of clothing in the textile chamber.

The exhibitions at the Swedish History Museum

The Swedish History Museum has five permanent exhibitions on different themes:

Exhibitions on prehistoric times

Here, visitors are guided through the different eras of prehistoric times by means of eight different life stories. These are vividly presented by means of numerous exhibits on life, hunting, crafts and art.

Vikings

The supposedly cruel Norse warriors are of course a must in a Swedish history museum. The Viking exhibitions get to the bottom of the Nordic men and women by presenting their way of life, their conquests and their trade.

Church art in the Middle Ages

The museum houses one of the most comprehensive exhibitions of medieval church art in Northern Europe. Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of church art through paintings and sculptures.

Gold Room or Treasure Chamber

The Gold Room, designed as an underground treasure chamber, houses a rich collection of gold and silver from prehistoric times and the Middle Ages.

Textile Chamber

Garments from different eras are exhibited in the Textile Chamber. One focus is on medieval textiles from Swedish churches.
