Bangkok is a true shopper’s paradise and part of the paradisiacal shopping experience one can have in the Thai metropolis is the MBK Center (short for “Mahboonkrong”). At the time of its opening in 1985, MBK Center was the largest shopping center in all of Asia. Today, it no longer holds this title, but it is still a very special kind of shopping temple, where you can easily spend a whole day. On almost 90,000 square meters, visitors can expect around 2,000 stores on eight floors. Every day, almost 100,000 visitors come to MBK to shop for clothing, fashion accessories, suitcases, bags, leather goods, jewelry, toys, electronic goods of all kinds, food and many other things.

The range of goods in the MBK Center

The MBK Center is located in the middle of the “shopping heart” of Bangkok, where one shopping mall follows the other. It is connected via pedestrian bridges to the neighboring malls Siam Discovery, Siam Centre and Siam Paragon. In contrast to the latter three, which are a bit more stylish and posh, MBK is known for its more budget-friendly offerings. Really sensational bargains can be made here. The range of goods in many of the stores is almost more comparable to the markets of Bangkok than to other shopping centers. And the prices in most of the stores of the MBK Center are negotiable – so haggling is the order of the day. Another big advantage of the MBK is that, unlike the often stuffy and hot markets, you can enjoy a wonderfully air-conditioned shopping experience all day long.

Prices and quality in the MBK Center

However, the very low prices conversely mean that many products are fakes. If you think you can get original Adidas, Gucci or Tommy Hilfiger products for a few euros, you should think again. In this respect, one should pay a little more attention to the quality of the products when buying, especially clothing. After all, counterfeiting does not have to be synonymous with poor quality. If it is not so important to have original goods in your closet and prefer to have a fuller wardrobe, you will be very happy at the MBK Center.

The floors of the MBK Center

Roughly speaking, the stores in the MBK can be divided as follows: On the first floor there are market stalls with a wide variety of goods, fast-food stores and a supermarket. Most fashion stores are located on the lower floors. Electronics stores are primarily at home on the 3rd and 4th floors, and home furnishings and souvenir stores can be found on the 5th and 6th floors.

If you get hungry while power shopping, you can fill your belly at two food courts. On the 5th floor there is one with international cuisine and on the 6th floor one with Thai dishes.

On the top floor of the MBK Center, visitors will find an entertainment complex with a cinema, karaoke, arcades, a 3D trick art museum and other restaurants. So there is plenty of variety during a shopping trip.
