Patpong is a mixture of red light district, party mile and night market. The manageable neighborhood actually consists only of Soi Patpong 1 and Soi Patpong 2, two parallel side streets to Silom Road and the connecting streets between the two sois. Patpong has undergone a similar development as the Reeperbahn in Hamburg. Once a notorious red-light district, Patpong is now thoroughly touristy and is crowded every evening by thousands and thousands of tourists from all over the world.

Charateristics of Patpong

The fascination of Patpong is probably best explained by the hustle and bustle that begins here after dark. Still a gray and desolate area during the day, the neighborhood turns into a lively sea of lights in the evening. Around 7 p.m., most of the street vendors have set up their stalls, the bars fill up, the cookshops are cooking in full swing, the music is turned up in the discos and the first shows start.

Many tourists come here to stock up on fake branded goods at the night market. Others appreciate the neighborhood’s lively bar and club scene. Another reason for a detour to Patpong are also the numerous restaurants that offer very good Thai and international cuisine.

The red light activities in Patpong

However, Patpong is still best known for its red light activities. Signs advertising GoGo and pussy shows are flashing everywhere. If you still don’t notice the hardly overlooked neon signs, one of the countless touts will draw your attention to the shows. It is best not to react to the approach at all, because during a walk through Patpong it definitely does not remain with only one pickup line.

The GoGo shows usually feature listless bikini girls dancing on chrome poles. Some bars leave the doors open so you can peek in from outside. If you want to see “something more”, you can visit one of the various pussy shows. Talented ladies perform all kinds of tricks with their private parts using ping pong balls, cigarettes, bananas and other rather un-erotic objects. Of course, in these establishments other ladies also try to establish contacts with the lords of creation and animate them to further pleasures.

With the shows, you should be careful not to get ripped off. Often only the first few minutes of a show are free, after that you have to buy more or less every new show interlude with a tip or a drink (which are naturally not very cheap in such places). So if you end up with a pretty fat bill on the table, don’t be surprised.

At 1 o’clock in the morning the party and fun in Patpong comes to an end. That is the closing time. Around an hour later, the last party guests usually leave the entertainment district.
