WAT TRAIMIT

Description

Essentials about Wat Traimit in brief

Wat Traimit is a Second Class Buddhist temple located at the end of Yaowarat Road near Bangkok’s main Hua Lamphong station. Wat Traimit is commonly known as the “Temple of the Golden Buddha” because of its fascinating Golden Buddha statue. Standing more than three meters tall and weighing around 5.5 tons, it is the world’s largest Buddha made of gold. The statue is made of 4% gold in the base and 40-80% in the body. The 45 kilogram face is even said to be made of pure gold.

The history of Wat Traimit

Wat Traimit was donated by three Chinese in the 18th century, which is why the temple was also called Sam Chin (Temple of the Three Chinese) until 1939. The extremely valuable Buddha statue could be admired for about five decades in a wihan, which was built in 1955. In 2006, it was decided to erect a more dignified building for the Golden Buddha. The new Phra Maha mondop was inaugurated at the end of 2008.

The building of Wat Traimit

The building has three floors. On the first and second floors is a museum (the Knowledge Centre of the Community), which provides extensive information on the history of the Chinese community in Bangkok. On the third floor, visitors are introduced to the history of the Golden Buddha. The Golden Buddha itself is enthroned on the fourth floor. Worshippers light incense sticks here to honor Buddha. Likewise, numerous flowers adorn the room as offerings.
