Essentials about Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary in brief

Dubai is known more for its skyscrapers than for its nature. But what many people don’t know is that the city not only attracts millions of tourists every year, but tens of thousands of migratory birds also make a stopover here on their flights from Africa to Asia. From the three bird watching stations of Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, amateur ornithologists can observe a wide variety of birds depending on the season.

Just a few meters from the city’s gigantic skyline lie the marshes of the Ras Al Khor nature reserve – a true paradise for birdwatchers. The name, by the way, means “head of the creek” and alludes to the fact that the origin of Dubai Creek is located here. The Ras Al Khor covers an area of 620 hectares of salt flats, mud flats, mangroves and lagoons.

The birds of Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary

Bird watching stations have been set up in three places. In winter, the mascots of the nature reserve are on site – the flamingos. At the last count, over 500 were counted. But also gray, silver and reef herons, cormorants, black-winged stilts, water striders, ospreys and about 170 other bird species like to settle in Ras Al Chor.
