Essentials about the Science Museum in brief
With over three million visitors a year, the Science Museum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in London and is not only worth a visit for technology fans. Located right next to the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum is part of the so-called “Exhibition Road” in the South Kensington district.
The history of the Science Museum
The museum was founded in 1857, when it was still part of the Victoria and Albert Museum, but became independent in 1909 due to the steadily growing collection. Since 1913, the Science Museum has been located in its current building, which has been expanded several times over the decades.
The collections of the Science Museum
The museum consists of seven different levels that show the development of research and technology in the fields of astronomy, meteorology, biochemistry, electronics, navigation, aviation and photography. The Science Museum’s collections include more than 300,000 items, including some world-famous ones such as a telescope by Galileo Galilei, Stephenson’s Rocket and Puffing Billy locomotives (the world’s oldest surviving steam locomotive), some of the world’s oldest steam engines, the world’s first telephone by Alexander Graham Bell, the world’s first jet engine, a reconstruction of Crick and Watson’s DNA model, and the command capsule from the Apollo 10 mission. In addition to the exhibitions, the Science Museum also houses an IMAX 3D cinema showing science and nature documentaries.
