The Shard, located right at the southern end of London Bridge, is London’s newest and also most visible landmark. At a height of 310 meters, the skyscraper is the tallest building in Great Britain and the fourth tallest in Europe. The architecture of The Shard

The Shard owes its name to its resemblance to a shard of glass. The skyscraper, which is completely glazed with 11,000 panes of glass, is pyramid-shaped and tapers off towards the top. The building, designed by Italian star architect Renzo Piano, was built between 2009 and 2012. Due to its unconventional appearance, The Shard was and still is very controversial. Critics accuse those responsible for the building of visually destroying London’s cityscape. However one may feel about it, The Shard is certainly an eye-catcher.

The building’s 72 floors house a wide variety of facilities, including apartments, a luxury hotel, restaurants, stores and offices. For most people, of course, the goal of their visit is the observation deck, located at a height of 244 meters and thus the highest in London. It needs no mention that from this lofty height, the view is breathtaking. The observation deck of The Shard is the only place from which you can overlook the whole of London.
