Art lovers are strongly advised to visit the Wallace Collection. Housed in a townhouse just north of Oxford Street, the art museum is one of the lesser-known in London, but with nearly 5,500 exhibits it has one of the largest and most beautiful collections of works of art and art objects of all kinds from the 15th to the 19th century.

The collection of the Wallace Collection

The museum was opened in 1900 and originates from the private collection of Sir Richard Wallace, which was bequeathed to the British state by his widow at the end of the 19th century. Of particular importance is the collection of works of art of the French Ancien Regime from the 18th century, with a large number of paintings, pieces of furniture, porcelain, weapons and armor. In addition, the collection of paintings includes important works by Titian, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck, Frans Hals, Canaletto and Velázquez, among others. The collection of princely arms and armor from all over Europe and the Orient is also among the finest in Britain.
