If you visit Los Angeles with children, sooner or later you will inevitably end up at the Los Angeles Zoo. The LA Zoo may not quite be able to compete with the world-famous San Diego Zoo in California, but it is certainly one of the more beautiful and interesting zoos in the US. Covering over 50 acres, the zoo is home to more than 1,200 animals from around 350 species and is also officially a botanical garden due to its beautifully landscaped design. The Los Angeles Zoo is also known primarily for its successful breeding programs, which have provided a future for some rare and endangered species. It is located in the northwest corner of Griffith Park immediately adjacent to the Autry Museum of the American West.

In the zoo you can see amphibians, fish, reptiles, mammals, invertebrates and birds from all continents. Among the mammals, Asian elephants, gorillas, koalas, lions, jaguars, chimpanzees and tigers are especially popular. Reptiles range from alligators to rattlesnakes and Komodo dragons. Among birds, macaws, flamingos, condors and bald eagles stand out. The number of amphibians and fish shown is rather manageable.

Los Angeles Zoo is worth a visit not only for its fauna, but also for its flora. Few zoos are as elaborately and beautifully landscaped as the one in LA. With over 7,000 plants from more than 800 species, the zoo almost resembles a jungle in some places. No wonder the zoo was also certified as a botanical garden in 2002 and has since been officially called the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
