THE BROAD

Description

Essentials about The Broad in brief

The Broad is one of Los Angeles’ newest museums. Opened in 2015, the museum is a must-see for all contemporary art lovers. It features the 2,000-work collection of the museum’s founders and namesakes, husband-and-wife team Eli and Edythe Broad. Located between the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles and the Walt Disney Music Hall in Downtown LA, The Broad is well worth a visit not only for its exquisite art collection but also for its spectacular architecture.

The architecture of The Broad

The extraordinary building of The Broad was designed by the architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The exterior is reminiscent of a honeycomb and was deliberately chosen to contrast with the curved metal façade of the Walt Disney Music Hall located directly next door. The museum’s honeycomb façade of 2,500 rhomboid panels is designed to provide ideal lighting conditions inside the building. The Broad has 4,600 square meters of exhibition space on three levels.

The Broad collection

The Broad’s collection consists of some 2,000 works by 200 artists, including the who’s who of the contemporary art scene. Among others, Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol are represented with works in the museum. Due to the generous space available, oversized art installations can also be shown in the museum.
