Madison Square Garden (MSG) is probably the most famous arena in the world (at least that’s how it describes itself). The multi-purpose arena in Midtown Manhattan is mainly used for sports events such as basketball, boxing and ice hockey, but also for concerts and other large events.

The history of Madison Square Garden

Madison Square Garden has existed since 1879, but has had to change locations several times in the course of its history. Today’s arena has been located at the intersection of 8th Avenue and 31st Street above the tracks of neighboring Pennsylvania Station since 1968. Within the next few years, however, the MSG will have to move again to accommodate modernization of the station.

Events at Madison Square Garden

Today, the arena complex consists of a convention center, a movie theater, a theater and a sports field. Madison Square Garden is home to both the New York Knicks basketball team and the New York Rangers ice hockey team. During games, the arena seats nearly 20,000 visitors. Many world-famous artists have also performed and continue to perform at Madison Square Garden. The most frequent so far have been Elton John and Billy Joel, who have performed here more than 60 times. The MSG also seats up to 20,000 spectators at concerts.

Every February, Madison Square Garden hosts the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the oldest dog show in the world. Occasionally, MSG also serves as a filming location for movies or is rented out for business and private parties.
