Essentials about the New Museum of Contemporary Art in brief
Fans of contemporary art should definitely see the New Museum of Contemporary Art when visiting New York City. Founded in 1977, the museum is considered one of the most prestigious contemporary art venues in the world.
The history of the New Museum of Contemporary Art
The museum was initiated by Marcia Tucker, who previously held the post of Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Whitney Museum. During the first five years of its existence, the New Museum of Contemporary Art had no permanent exhibition space. Exhibitions were held at rotating venues. In 1983, the New Museum moved to the Astor Building in SoHo, and in 2005 received a new building on Bowery Street in the East Village. The grand opening was celebrated in late 2007.
Designed by Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, the museum is certainly one of the most striking buildings in Manhattan: it takes the form of staggered boxes stacked on top of each other. The seven-story building has a floor space of approximately 20,000 square meters.
The exhibitions in the New Museum of Contemporary Art
The museum hosts about six major exhibitions each year, some solo, some group. The museum often presents the works of previously unknown artists, some of whom have subsequently achieved world fame, such as Ana Mendieta, William Kentridge, David Wojnarowicz, Paul McCarthy and Andrea Zittel.
