TRIBECA

Description

Essentials about Tribeca in brief

As with many other New York City neighborhoods, Tribeca’s name is an abbreviation of its location. Tribeca stands for “Triangle Below Canal Street”. The neighborhood is thus bounded by Canal Street to the north, Broadway to the east, Vesey Street to the south and West Street to the west. Greenwich Village and SoHo adjoin Tribeca to the north, Chinatown is to the east, and the Financial District is to the south. A walk through Tribeca is not only worthwhile because of the old industrial architecture still preserved in many places, but also because of the great gastronomic scene and shopping opportunities.

Characteristics of Tribeca

Similar to its hip neighbors Greenwich Village and SoHo, Tribeca used to be an industrial district that has experienced a social revaluation in recent decades due to the influx of artists and creatives, who in turn have set a wave of gentrification in motion. Today, the streets of Tribeca are among the most expensive locations in the city, and arguably no other neighborhood can compete with the district’s celebrity density. The list of VIP residents is long. Among others, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Meryl Streep, Maria Carey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake have one (of their many) homes here.

The Tribeca Film Festival

One celebrity, however, is particularly rooted in Tribeca, and that is Robert DeNiro. The native New Yorker not only owns a restaurant, a hotel and a film production company here, but is also the founder and co-organizer of the Tribeca Film Festival. In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, DeNiro sought to restore the joy of life and celebration to New Yorkers through his festival. Since its inception in 2002, the Tribeca Film Festival has become a staple of New York City’s cultural calendar. All of Tribeca is in a state of emergency during the festival in the spring.

Shopping, Eating and drinking in Tribeca

A walk through Tribeca is not only worthwhile because of the old industrial architecture still preserved in many places, but also because of the great gastronomic scene and shopping opportunities. When it comes to bars, restaurants and clubs, you’re spoiled for choice in Tribeca. And shopaholics will find Tribeca one of the best shopping districts in the city.
