TRINITY CHURCH

Description

Essentials about Trinity Church in brief

Fortunately, when New York’s stockbrokers and bankers need a moment of reflection, they don’t have far to go. Then at the western end of Wall Street stands Trinity Church, one of the city’s most famous houses of worship. The present church building was completed in 1846 according to plans by Richard Upjohn in the neo-Gothic style. At 86 meters, the tower of Trinity Church was the tallest building in New York City at the time, but has since been clearly eclipsed (literally) by the skyscrapers in the immediate vicinity.

The Trinity Church Cemetery

The church that stands today was preceded by two predecessor buildings, from whose time the neighboring cemetery also dates. Some of the most famous personalities of the US founding history are buried there, among others the statesman Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804), one of the founding fathers of the USA; William Bradford (1590-1657), one of the “Pilgrim Fathers” and first colonists in New England; Robert Fulton (1765-1815), engineer and builder of the first steamships; Albert Gallatin (1761-1849), the longest serving Secretary of the Treasury in U.S. history; and Johann Jakob Astor (1763-1848), noted German-American entrepreneur and first multimillionaire in the United States.
