DOLORES PARK

Description

Essentials about Dolores Park in brief

Covering almost 16 hectares, Dolores Park is one of the recreational hotspots for residents of the surrounding neighborhoods. No wonder, given the wide range of activities the park offers its visitors: Sports enthusiasts can expect a soccer field, six tennis courts, a basketball court and a multipurpose court. There is a playground for children and two off-leash areas for dogs. Those who prefer to lie lazily in the sun or picnic can do so excellently on the huge lawns, which are lined with shady palm trees. By the way, from the southwest corner of the park you have a great view of downtown San Francisco. Dolores Park is also home to many festivals, open-air movies and other cultural events.

The history of Dolores Park

The park is named after the nearby Mission Dolores monastery. A Jewish cemetery used to be located here. In 1905, the city of San Francisco acquired the land and established Dolores Park. A year later, the devastating San Francisco earthquake occurred. At the time, emergency shelters were set up on the park grounds for more than 1,500 citizens who had become homeless.
