Essentials about the Marina District in brief

The Marina District is one of San Francisco’s northernmost neighborhoods, drawing its appeal from its picturesque location on San Francisco Bay. To the west, the Marina District borders the former Presidio military compound and Crissy Field, and to the east, Russian Hill and Fisherman’s Wharf. Most tourists pass through the Marina District when they make the (absolutely worthwhile) effort to walk along the coast to the Golden Gate Bridge. This is because from the Marina District you have a magnificent view of the bridge, the bay and Alcatraz Island.

The history of the Marina District

The area of today’s district was the site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, for which a lagoon was filled with sand and thus converted into usable land. The World’s Fair allowed San Francisco to show that it had recovered from the 1906 earthquake. After the exposition, all buildings except the Palace of Fine Arts were demolished to make way for today’s residential district.

If you walk along the coast, you will pass through the picturesque Marina Green park. This is where San Francisco’s marinas are located. Marina Green is a good starting point for boats and surfers, because the wind here often exceeds the 80 km/h mark.
