RUSSIAN HILL

Description

Essentials about Russian Hill in brief

San Francisco is a city of many hills. The hill that offers one of the best views of the entire city and its surroundings is Russian Hill. From the top of the hill you have a great panoramic view of the entire San Francisco Bay, from the Bay Bridge to Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge to the Marin Headlands. And the Russian Hill is also home to San Francisco’s most famous stretch of road, the hairpin curves of Lombard Street.

The location and the name of Russian Hill

Russian Hill is located in the heart of the city and lies between Fisherman’s Wharf to the north, Nob Hill to the south, North Beach to the east and the Marina District to the west. The neighborhood’s name dates back to the Gold Rush era when settlers discovered a small Russian cemetery at the top of the hill. Officially, it was never determined who was buried there. However, it was assumed that the dead were Russian fur traders and sailors from nearby Fort Ross. The cemetery was removed, but the “Russian” name remains to this day.

Lombard Street

Due to the steep slopes of the hill, the sidewalks of many streets have steps. Another attraction of Russian Hill are some roads closed for cars, such as Macondray Lane and Fallon Place. However, the main attraction of Russian Hill is the most famous street section of San Francisco. Every day thousands of people make their way to Russian Hill to get a photo of the hairpin turns of Lombard Street.
