In no other city in the world can you find so many unusual buildings.

With its incredible variety of sights and attractions, New York City is of course worth a trip all year round. However, if you are more sensitive to the weather, it is best to travel to NYC in spring (April, May) or fall (September, October). Then the temperatures in the city are the most pleasant and especially the spring blossoms in the many New York parks are a real experience. Summers in New York City can get very hot and also humid – not necessarily the best conditions for sightseeing. In winter, on the other hand, it can sometimes be quite frosty in NYC and a bone-chillingly cold wind can blow through the skyscraper canyons.

Shopping

New York City is a paradise for all shopaholics and is definitely one of the cities in the world where it’s best to travel with empty suitcases (or buy one on the spot). In NYC, no shopping wish remains unfulfilled. From huge department stores to exclusive luxury boutiques to trendy independent stores, you’ll find an incredible range of shopping options here.

If you want to get an overview of the goods on offer in the city, you would be well advised to head for one of the large department stores first. First and foremost is Macy’s, the oldest and most famous department store in New York City. Macy’s occupies an entire street block between 6th and 7th Avenues and 34th and 35th Streets. On the seven floors of the department store, you can find just about anything your shopping heart desires. Of course, with Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue and many more, there are a multitude of more or less exclusive department stores in the city.

Speaking of exclusive: If you travel to New York City with a well-filled wallet, it’s best to stroll along Fifth Avenue. It is one of the most exclusive shopping streets in the world. Armani, Cartier, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Versace – the list of international luxury brands represented by flagship stores on Fifth Avenue could go on and on. But also less expensive brands such as Michael Kors and Tommy Hilfiger are represented on Fifth Avenue with their own stores. In general, it can be said that almost every self-respecting brand has one or more (often bombastic) flagship stores in New York City.

If you have more individual tastes and don’t usually find what you’re looking for in chain stores, you should head to Greenwich Village, the Meatpacking District, SoHo and Tribeca neighborhoods. This is where a large number of smaller and trendy independent stores are located. Especially fashionistas will find many boutiques with stylish collections in these neighborhoods, which are not available elsewhere.

If you really want to fill your pockets and save money, you should visit one of the outlet malls outside the city. As in Europe, you won’t find the latest collections here, but you can get the goods at extremely reduced prices. First and foremost is the Garden State Plaza Mall. On almost 200,000 square meters, 400 stores provide the ultimate shopping experience. In addition to major department stores such as Macy’s, J.C. Penney, Nordstorm, Lord & Taylor and Neiman Marcus, you will find stores of almost all major brands such as Abercrombie, GAP, Hollister, Michael Kors and Superdry. Located just 20 kilometers from Manhattan, the mall is the largest in the state of New Jersey. And the beauty of New Jersey is that there is no sales tax on clothing and shoes.

Fashion shoppers are also advised to visit the Jersey Gardens outlet center. Located in Elizabeth, New Jersey, the outlet is primarily home to higher-priced fashion chains. And the Woodbury Common Premium Outlet, located about 70 kilometers north of New York City, is definitely worth a visit. In no less than 220 stores, pretty much all the well-known brands are represented here.

Last but not least, a note on taxes: The prices listed on the price tags are always net (i.e. without VAT). In New York City, the value-added tax for the city and the state is added on top at the checkout (currently 8.875% in total).

Food and drink

Finding a good restaurant and the right bar in New York City is not that easy – the choice is simply too great. In no other city in the world the gastro scene is so huge and so varied. The hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have come to New York City throughout history have taken their national cuisines with them to NYC. No wonder the city is teeming with Chinese, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Jewish, Mexican and Russian restaurants. Just about every international cuisine is represented in New York with its own eatery.

New Yorkers are known to be almost always in a hurry. Accordingly, the offer of fast food is large. On every street corner, you’ll find the usual suspects of the international fast food scene, quick-service pizza restaurants and the hot dog street vendors so typical of New York City. A typical New York institution in terms of fast food are the so-called “delicatessen stores” (usually just called “delis” for short). These usually offer fresh and varied food relatively inexpensively. From soups to bagels and sandwiches to salads, the selection is large.

The so-called “diners” are also typically American. Here you can get a big breakfast at unbeatable prices. However, many diners offer cuisine around the clock. In contrast, most restaurants, especially the more upscale ones, close between lunch and dinner.

Last but not least, here are two important practical tips for dining out in New York City. First, unlike most restaurants in our latitudes, there is no free seating in NYC, and you’ll have to deal with an American institution at the entrance: The so-called “maître de table” (often just called “maître d” for short). He assigns the tables to the guests. Secondly, in the U.S., waiters and waitresses generally cannot live on their wages – they depend on tips. Therefore, even in New York City, it is more or less obligatory to leave a proper tip on the table. As a guideline, it is recommended to tip at least twice the sales tax, which is about 17%. Those paying by credit card enter the tip on the line provided. If you pay cash, you get the full change back and leave the tip appropriately on the table.

Nightlife and entertainment

Since Frank Sinatra we know that New York City is the city that never sleeps. Accordingly, the city’s nightlife and entertainment offerings are fantastic. It is important to know that New York City is an extremely fast-moving city. This applies equally to the nightlife. What is hip and in today can be uncool and out tomorrow. That’s why it’s so important to check websites or magazines for the latest entertainment program.

One of the main reasons for a trip to New York City is, of course, the theater and musical scene. The Theater District around Times Square and Broadway is home to more than 40 stages with their partly world-famous performances. But other parts of the city also offer a wide range of off-Broadway performances. Those who like to go to the opera or ballet will not be able to avoid a visit to Lincoln Center. The Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Ballet are two of the world’s best companies of their kind.

If you like concerts, New York City has probably the best calendar of events in the world. From large concerts in the world-famous halls of Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall to small live music stages in bars and pubs, NYC offers the full range of musical entertainment. It goes without saying that every conceivable style of music is on offer.

And those who come to New York City simply to party will need many weeks to even get a first impression of the party scene in the world metropolis – that’s how large the range of bars, clubs and discos is. When it comes to clubs, there are two important tips to keep in mind for a successful evening. First, New York bouncers take their job very seriously. Generally, the hipper the club, the harder the door. To increase your chances of being let in, you should also dress properly. If you’re underdressed, you don’t stand a chance. And secondly, bouncers love ID. If you look older but don’t have ID with you, you may be out of luck. Quickly your age is estimated to be under 21 and then the doors remain closed.
